I have a tunnel phobia, which doesn't seem to be unusual, but I thought I would tell you about it because my perception of the thing is a bit different from usual. I find that most discussion or analysis of 'tunnel phobia' involves the victim feeling enclosed or trapped: in other words, a form of claustrophobia. In my case, what frightens me is the long perspective of the tunnel, so maybe it's closer to a 'falling' phobia.
If I see a photo of a railway tunnel in which the entrance is just a black hole, with the far end not visible, then it's not so bad. However, if I see a picture of a railway tunnel in which the far end is visible as a little circle of light, then it fills me with a kind of horror and dread. Even worse than railway tunnels are canal tunnels (real or in photos), they are the worst, they are horrific things possibly because the water gives them a 'bottomless' effect, also because the dark water is itself unsettling.
I suspect my fear is caused by the dark space of the tunnel itself, linking the front face of the tunnel with that light at the far end. If I was inside the tunnel, it wouldn't be so bad because there wouldn't be the entrance to give a point of reference.
Strange? Or do other tunnel phobes feel the same?
It might be worth pointing out that I have happily explored old mine tunnels, about two metres high and one metre wide, so there's no question of an 'enclosure' phobia here, in fact I find it comforting to be able to touch the walls. But to explore, say, an abandoned railway tunnel would be a different matter altogether and I think maybe it's because of the scale of the thing.

When I try to sleep at night, I see things. It scares me. Not so much the dark, but the things I see. I'm afriad they'll be real. I can't stand it! I'm very paranoid, I will not sleep in a dark room alone, ever.

I cannot close my eyes when I am in water. Showers are the worst nowadays since i've mad the decision to avoid lakes and pools all together. I always feel like someone will drown me when my eyes are closed, or when i open my eyes something horrifying will be in front of me.

Whenever I shut off a light in my house, be it a hallway or a room, I have to run into the next lit area. I'm not afraid of the dark, as this only affects me in my home. I've been doing this for over 20 years.

I have a phobia of going up the stairs at night if I'm alone or if the lights are out. I feel like there's a murderer waiting at the top or chasing me at the bottom.

I have an intense phobia of mirrors at night. When I walk past one, my silhouette scares the shit out of me. Whenever I try and cure this phobia by standing in front of a mirror at night, it gets worse, and I can almost picture another shady black figure snatching me right from behind and me barely seeing it all happen in the mirror.

I fear the dark. It makes me think of death all the TIME! especially before I go to sleep I always play with my DS and I also watch tv. I would leave it on sleep timer like 40 - 90 minutes to make sure I can sleep.
